Tony Flowers, award winning illustrator, and creator and illustrator of the children’s book series
Dizzy and Friends, is available to visit your school to talk to your students.
BOOKS:
The Dizzy and Friends series is aimed at the 0 – 6-year-old children using Tony’s Australian native animal characters to illustrate the books. Stories are by Rebecca Johnson.
Dizzy and Friends was published in 2004 by Steve Parish Publishing (www.steveparish.com.au;
www.dizzyandfriends.com.au )
Tony has won several awards in the Oshima Handmade Picture Book Competition in Japan for his own books.
The 9 Lives of Oliver won the Bronze Award in 2003,
Molly the Glassblowing Dog was awarded a commendation in 2004 and
Splash! (a pop-up book) was awarded the Manichi Prize in 2005.
In 2005 Tony was invited to hold a solo exhibition at the Oshima Picture Book Museum in Toyama, Japan, which included workshops for children.
Tony is currently working on illustrations for several of the “Bitter Beat” books,
(launch date: April 2006), The Crime of the Agent Mariner and Jo Blight.
SCHOOL TALKS:
Tony has given talks at numerous schools in Canberra where he was a popular speaker.
Canberra Girls Grammar purchased one of his illustrations and their photocopiers are named after two of his characters, Lilly and Jamaica. (Andrew Boswell, with Tony as the illustrator, is currently writing these characters into stories.)
Tony is well received by students and presents lively and enjoyable talks. Tony’s favourite question from Tharwa Public School was “What car do you drive?”
Enthusiastic children have responded well to Tony, many young critics have told him
“You should be a drawer!” - Tony has listened to the advice and is busily working towards this goal at the moment!
Tony structures his talks for different years, from the younger infant years through to University talks. The older school years often incorporate Tony’s talks into creative writing courses whereas the younger years focus more on the fun of illustration and character creation.
Tony recommends that schools with creative writing classes bring him in early in the project as he can provide helpful pointers and inspire the students with his own knowledge of illustration and character creation, and the role that illustration has in story telling.
Tony’s skilful drawings are beautiful and captivating, he is able to show movement and emotion and has a range of drawing styles from the simple cartoon style to the more complex and emotive illustrations shown above.
Tony’s work can be viewed at
www.flowersink.com.au. Tony has had work published by the National Museum of Australia, Canberra, and regularly illustrates cartoons for their promotional pamphlets and Friends Magazine, working in conjunction with the infamous Tim the Yowie Man on many projects.
Tony charges below the standard rates recommended by the
Children’s Book Council of Australia. A 1 hour session costs
$100. Multiple sessions and sessions for small schools are
negotiable.
